We’ve already written much about Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, but we can’t stress enough how Microsoft’s niche amateur aviator revival is one of the most impressive games you can play on a capable PC (it launches on Xbox consoles in 2021). No one could have prepared us for what 2020 had in store for the world, but one of the year’s biggest and best gaming surprises is the number of new games that offered us the joy of flight from the comfort of our own grounded homes. The ongoing lockdown leaves me more nostalgic than ever for airports, window seats, and clouds close enough to touch. But when it comes to cutting-edge, world-changing technology worth celebrating, what’s more futuristic than flight?Ĭreating the means to lift our bodies miles off the surface and transport them around the world remains humanity’s greatest modern achievement. Video games themselves are an exciting and futuristic intersection of art and technology. As a tech writer, I like sci-fi gizmos and gadgets. I would rather live in the future than in the past. Still, instead of using technology to recreate more primitive eras, I prefer games that celebrate technology. Meanwhile, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin may not be the most innovative brawler in the world, but it leaves a strong impression with martial arts movie vibes pulled right from the 1970s. I didn’t have to play much of Ys Origins to know that, despite its solid action-RPG gameplay, its medieval fantasy look does nothing for me. When you play as many video games as I do, you develop a pretty strong grasp on your own preferences, particularly when it comes to aesthetics.
